Using CD's to reach a child who lives far away:

Do you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or friend's children who don't live near you? Here's a great idea from Linda Sikut ( www.bakingabusiness.com ) who's granddaughter lives in Hungary. "I wanted to find a way for my granddaughter to know me even though she lives so far away. I live in New York State, it is a challenge." said Linda. "I decided to send her books. Not just any book, but my voice on CD reading the story to her."

Here's what Linda did. First she read the story using software on her computer then burned it to disk. Then she created a CD label and CD jacket by scanning the book cover. The label and jacket had the title of the book, the author and a photo of Linda. Next to the photo she typed "Read by Grandma."  To create these Linda used Paint Shop Pro to scan and create. Then used Printmaster to size, add text and print. Of course, other software can be used. Once everything was done, Linda glued the CD jacket inside the book and inserted the CD. Above the jacket, Linda inscribed the book to her granddaughter, then signed and dated it.

"My son was home and took the first batch of books back with him. I will be going to Hungary in a few months and my hope is that by then my granddaughter will know my voice. I'll bring another batch of books with me, then after that my plan is to send a new book every month." said Linda "This idea could be used for many other situations and could be expanded by using a camcorder to record you reading the book, as was mentioned by another member of a craft group of which I'm a member. Just play with it and have fun while building lasting memories."

Here's an example of what the CD label and jacket would look like along with the template Linda used to create the CD jacket. This template was adapted to remove all the interior lines for a clean look.

What a great Idea! My grandkids live far away from me too, and I may give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
