Make your own Photo Puzzles

Puzzles can be tricky to master. A heat press makes this craft alot easier, however most people do not own one. So, we generally recommend the 12 piece puzzle as a first try at this. Also, you can use any type of transfer paper BUT we strongly recommend using our cold peel transfer paper for this. Here we are going to demonstrate doing a transfer on the 12 piece puzzle using a hand iron with our cold peel transfer paper. The steps can be applied to other puzzles and other types of transfer paper.

Step 1

Start by designing your print and making your transfer.

Step 2

Once you've printed the transfer, it is usually good practice to lay the puzzle on the print just to verify it is sized right. You can also get a good idea of where you will place the puzzle on the print. Notice also that we do not trim the transfer paper like is normally done on shirts.

Step 3

As shown the transfer is now laid over the puzzle. You need to take great care to insure the puzzle is positioned properly. This is one of the most important steps as misplacement will result in a ruined project. There are two ways to do this: Lay the puzzle on the transfer as shown above and "flip" it over as a unit. Or, if you have a strong enough light source, you can actually see through the transfer to the puzzle itself and position it from there.

Step 4

Next, you iron the transfer. In this step, you follow the directions for time and temp recommended with your transfers.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT PEEL THE TRANSFER YET!!!!!!

Step 5

This step is unique to puzzles when using a hand iron. With the transfer and puzzle still hot, you now rub the transfer using a towel or other suitable material. Do this for about 45 seconds. This helps to get the transfer embedded into the puzzle material.

Step 6

You now do a final ironing. Use the same time and temp settings recommended by the transfer supplier.

Step 7

And lastly, you now peel the backing of the transfer. It is not shown, but it is good practice to leave the iron on the transfer and peel the backing while applying heat.

Step 8
